Bookmarks allow you to mark important locations in a publication and go back to them.
You can also add tags, a specific color and a note to organize them.
Adding a bookmark
While reading or listening, an Add a bookmark action in upper right corner of the screen.
To add a bookmark:
- Click on Add a bookmark
- the Add a bookmark icon will be replaced by a Remove a bookmark one
- and a confirmation message will be displayed in the lower left corner of the screen
While reading an EPUB file you can also place bookmarks more precisely by selecting text first before clicking on Add a bookmark.
When you place a bookmark using text, it will show up as a colored icon in the margin.
Deleting a bookmark
If you’ve placed a bookmark without selecting text, you’ll notice that the bookmark action is displayed with a blue background and a different icon, which is meant to Remove a bookmark.
To remove a bookmark:
- Click on Remove a bookmark
- the Remove a bookmark icon will be replaced by an Add a bookmark one
- and a confirmation message will be displayed in the lower left corner of the screen
If you’re listening to an audiobook or if you’ve placed a bookmark using text, this action might not show up on your screen.
To remove a bookmark in this case, you’ll need to go through the list of bookmarks:
- If the bookmark icon is visible in the margin of the text, click on this icon to automatically open the list of bookmarks.
- If not, please refer to our next section related to managing bookmarks.
From the list of bookmarks, you can click on the trash icon under a specific bookmark to remove it.
Managing bookmarks
While reading or listening to a publication, you can access the list of bookmarks at any time by clicking on the Navigation button in the upper right corner.
Click on Bookmarks to view your list of bookmarks and manage them.
In this list, each bookmark is displayed with the following information:
- Title of the bookmark (this will default to a bookmark number if text isn’t associated to a bookmark)
- Color
- Note
- Tag
- Date when the bookmark was first created
- Progression in the publication (using a percentage)
Clicking on the title of the bookmark, will dismiss the list and jump to the location of the bookmark in the publication.
Each individual bookmark can either be:
- edited (pencil icon)
- or deleted (trash icon)
The following actions are available to interact with the list of bookmarks:
- Sort
- Filter
- Import
- Export
- Delete all bookmarks
By default, bookmarks in this view are sorted based on their creation date but the following options are available for sorting:
- Progression (based on the progression in the publication)
- Last created
- Last modified
Bookmarks can also be assigned a specific color and/or tag.
If you’ve assigned any additional information to your bookmarks, you’ll be able to filter the list based on the following criteria:
- Tag
- Color
- Creator (person or organization who created the bookmark)
We’ve covered how to remove a bookmark in the previous section of this page, but an additional action is also available to delete all bookmarks at once:
- click on Delete all bookmarks (this is represented by a trash icon at the top of the list)
- this will show up a confirmation message
- click on the Yes button to confirm
Editing a bookmark
Bookmarks are created with a minimum number of information but can be further edited to include:
- a note
- a color
- and a tag
This feature can be accessed either from:
- the list of bookmarks
- or by clicking on the bookmark icon in the margin
Exporting and importing bookmarks
Bookmarks can be exported or imported per publication. You can use this feature to:
- archive your bookmarks as a file
or share them with someone else
Clicking on the Export button will open a file dialog where you can select:
- the name of the file
- and the location where the file will be generated
This will generate a .annotation file that contains all of your bookmarks for a given publication.
Clicking on the Import button will open the file explorer. Only .annotation files can be selected from this dialog, every other file type will be greyed out.
