In the settings screen, you’ll be able to access application-wide settings for Thorium Desktop. For settings specific to the reading or listening view, please refer to the relevant sections.
Setting the language
Thorium Desktop is available in many languages and will default to your system language.
That said, you’re also free to change this language at any time:
- Open the Settings
- Click on General
- Click on the Language dropdown menu and select another language
Setting the theme
Thorium Desktop will follow your system preferences by default. It’s important to point out that the app’s theme is different from your reading theme.
This means that for example:
- Thorium Desktop itself could use a dark theme
- While you could use a sepia theme while reading
If you’d like to force a light or dark theme for the app:
- Open the settings
- Click on Appearance
- Click on the Application Theme dropdown menu and select a new option
Customizing keyboard shortcuts
Thorium Desktop provides an extensive list of keyboard shortcuts that you can customize at any time.
Storage
This feature allows creating additional storage space for publications, as a way to overcome the saturation of the default storage.
Select Storage in the Settings window.
At the top of the window, you’ll find informations about this feature.
In Locations, the System Storage section indicates where the publications are stored if no additional storage is selected.
In Configuration, you can select additional storage using a system folder selection. Once you choose it, every publication imported into the application will be stored in this folder but you’ll always be able to modify this storage or remove it.
Please be aware that:
- If the additional storage is moved or removed, the corresponding folder will simply be detached from the application. Publications stored in this folder will be untouched, but they will no longer be accessible from the application.
- If the additional storage is removed, you should manually move the files to the system storage to keep references intact.
- If the additional storage is updated, you should manually move the files to the new location to keep references intact.
Recovery is a security feature. It checks that - in the system storage or the additional storage - publications on disk are referenced in the application database. In case a mismatch is found, the Recover publications button will solve the issue.
Other settings
Shared computer mode
By default, publications protected by LCP are kept in the local library of the application after their license expires. If a computer is shared by multiple users, for instance in a University, keeping expired publications in view is suboptimal.
This opt-in feature ensures that expired loans are automatically deleted (including personal annotations).
Improved experience for screen-readers
In order to improve the overall experience, we offer an opt-in feature that will detect the use of a screen-reader and adapt the user interface accordingly.
To enable this feature:
- Open the settings
- Click on General
- Scroll down to Improved support for screen readers
- Click on Enhance screen reader experience
Highlights and notes

Thorium Readers supports the ability to import and export highlights and notes, which allows you to exchange them with someone else.
To properly identify your highlights and notes:
- Open the settings
- Click on General
- Scroll down to Creator
- Type your name
- Select whether the name is tied to an organization (company, university…) or a person
Advanced users can also customize the HTML template used when exporting annotations to HTML.
