In the settings screen, you’ll be able to access application-wide settings for Thorium Desktop. For settings specific to the reading or listening view, please refer to the relevant sections.
Setting the language
Thorium Desktop is available in many languages and will default to your system language.
That said, you’re also free to change this language at any time:
- Open the Settings
- Click on General
- Click on the Language dropdown menu and select another language
Setting the theme
Thorium Desktop will follow your system preferences by default. It’s important to point out that the app’s theme is different from your reading theme.
This means that for example:
- Thorium Desktop itself could use a dark theme
- While you could use a sepia theme while reading
If you’d like to force a light or dark theme for the app:
- Open the settings
- Click on Appearance
- Click on the Application Theme dropdown menu and select a new option

Thorium Desktop provides an extensive list of keyboard shortcuts that you can customize at any time.
Other settings
Improved experience for screen-readers
In order to improve the overall experience, we offer an opt-in feature that will detect the use of a screen-reader and adapt the user interface accordingly.
To enable this feature:
- Open the settings
- Click on General
- Scroll down to Improved support for screen readers
- Click on Enhance screen reader experience
Highlights and notes
If you’d like to learn more about highlights and notes, make sure to check our dedicated page.
Thorium Readers supports the ability to import and export highlights and notes, which allows you to exchange them with someone else.
To properly identify your highlights and notes:
- Open the settings
- Click on General
- Scroll down to Creator
- Type your name
- Select whether the name is tied to an organization (company, university…) or a person
Advanced users can also customize the HTML template used when exporting annotations to HTML.
